The project includes Road D7 (Mbala to Kaseshya) with a distance of 25km and Road RD9 (Mbala to Kalambo falls) with a distance of 32km and an extra 10km of Urban roads in Mbala and 10km in Kaseshya.

The road length for the urban roads is over and above the 25km and 32km respectively, for the main project. The existing road D7, traverses a fairly flat terrain from Mbala to Kaseshya while RD9 traverses a rolling mountainous terrain from the D7 junction to Kalambo falls. Both existing road surface have suffered erosion, with isolated depressions due to wet spots. This road goes up to the boarder Zambia and Tanzania. It is under stress of heavy vehicles some even above 30 tone tonnage because there’s Weigh Bridge. Almost the entire stretch the riding quality is very poor characterized with rutting, corrugations and silting, during the rainy season it becomes worse.

The project included upgrading works under Double Bituminous Surface Treatment, and rehabilitation and widening works of urban roads.

The project also included the following Drainage Infrastructures: (i) Road surface drainage with the drainage of stormwater runoff; (ii) Subsurface drainage with the interception and disposal of groundwater flows; (iii) Erosion protection measures for the slopes.
